Summer 2008

The new-look summer 2008 issue of Altitude Magazine had even more features packed into a smaller, more compact size. Inside, we looked at the RAF’s role in sponsoring UK youth teams in rugby, football, basketball and hockey. We spoke to Senior Aircraftsman (SAC) John Mayman about fighting fires in Afghanistan and checked out the technical specification of the Search and Rescue (SAR) helicopter the Sea King. We also celebrated the RAF’s 90th Anniversary with a timeline illustrating how the Royal Air Force has changed over the years.

Winter 2007

Pick up the winter 2007 issue and find out more about the Hawk 128 – the aircraft the RAF uses to give new Pilots advanced flying and weapons training. Discover the difference the RAF’s Search and Rescue (SAR) crews made during the terrible floods that affected many parts of Britain in 2007. Find out about our two young RAF hot shots – Fast Jet Pilot Sasha Sheard and RAF Regiment Aircraftman Steve Potter. Plus, read all about the 23 lucky Altitude members who experienced life in the RAF Regiment for themselves.

Summer 2007

The summer 2007 issue featured the Harrier jump jet – the feat of British engineering that made the RAF the first Air Force in the world with vertical take-off jets. This issue also featured the 15 lucky Altitude members who won the chance to meet the Red Arrows, and witnessed some of the breathtaking manouvres that make them some of the world’s most respected Pilots.

Winter 2006

The 2006 winter issue took an in-depth look at the Chinook helicopter. These heavy-duty machines are used every day in RAF operations around the world and we climbed inside to see just how tough they are. You can also read about Fighter Controllers and find out how these individuals are the eyes of RAF Defence Pilots.

Summer 2006

Our summer issue featured the legendary Spitfire, which was 70 years old this year. Read about its history and find out how this aircraft came to dominate the skies during World War II. We also talked to an RAF football referee who officiates in the Football League and who ran the line during the last ever FA Cup Final at the old Wembley Stadium. Take his advice next time you hit the pitch and you’ll stay on the right side of the men in black.
