Fitness tips
Everybody joining the RAF must pass a basic fitness test. It’s simply a 1.5 mile run on a treadmill, which must be completed within the specified time for your age and gender.
Squadron Leader James Treweek is stationed at RAF Cosford where he is involved with Physical Education Research and Development. His advice to anyone attempting the test is to try and lead as active a life as possible.
“The test isn’t very difficult and it’s a guide as to how we aim to maintain a good level of health-based fitness throughout the RAF,” he explains.
His biggest tip on getting in shape to pass the test is to take part in a sport you enjoy. He also recommends a half hour jog two or three times a week, plus another session of low impact training like cycling, swimming or rowing.
“Enjoy doing something that keeps you active and you’ll stay fit and healthy all the time,” he explains.
This is a basic RAF Fitness Test for a new recruit aged 17 or under.
