RAF Basketball camps

Developing Skills

RAF Basketball camps

During the February half term hundreds of ballers from clubs in Lincolnshire, Wear Valley and Yorkshire got active at RAF Basketball & Development Camps. As proud sponsors of England Basketballs' national youth leagues, the Royal Air Force hosted some of the camps on RAF bases, providing the opportunity for players to develop their skills in a new environment.

Developing talent

The days were designed to be fun - allowing players to learn from each other- as well as insightful, with sessions run by RAF and England Basketball coaches, who were on hand to help improve shooting and passing, as well as to teach new drills.

Ryan Hopkins, 13 of Notts Novas said on the day “I really enjoyed learning some new skills – some of them I’d never done before! I’ve learned so much and it’s been a great day. Being in the RAF sounds good – it’s really sporty and there are lots of different types of jobs.”

Developing teamwork

The RAF’s motivational outreach team ran sessions to help improve communication skills and teamwork – just as important for any well-rounded successful player as scoring baskets. Working as part of a team is what the RAF is all about, and without good communication, the team doesn’t work well. The same goes for basketball, and the challenges set by the RAF team were designed to encourage the players to use these skills on the court.

Developing fitness

RAF Basketball camps

The camps held at RAF Linton-on-Ouse and RAF Waddington provided players an opportunity to experience the sporting facilities available in the RAF – they even ate lunch in the Junior Ranks Mess hall! The RAF’s Physical Training Instructors put them through their paces with challenging fitness routines that serving personnel go through.
