RAF Rugby
Q. Is there much opportunity to play rugby in the RAF?
A. There’s plenty of opportunity – as with many other sports. It’s important to stay fit in the RAF, so if you want to play a sport, you can.
Q. What style of rugby can I play?
A. You can play rugby union and rugby league.
Q. Can anyone play?
A. Rugby can be enjoyed by male and female players at all levels.
Q. What about the off-season period – what happens then?
A. Some people will play seven-a-side rugby. Others will play cricket or tennis or general fitness training.
Q. What about if I’m stationed overseas? Will I still be able to play rugby?
A. Yes, there are opportunities to play overseas. You may even be able to travel specifically to play in a tournament. The 24th Akrotiri International Floodlit Rugby 10s in Cyprus is coming up in May and RAF players have travelled to the US to play.
Q. Has the RAF had any famous players?
A. How about former England Captain Rory Underwood?
Q. I hear the RAF sponsors rugby in the community?
A. It certainly does. If you want to get into rugby, one of the best ways is to join a RAF-sponsored club at youth level. The RAF has sponsored rugby in Wales since 2005. They provide 15,000 young players with kit, coaching and facilities. Wherever you live in the UK, contact your local RAF station or rugby club to see what they offer.
