Training and qualifications

The RAF relies on the skills and abilities of our personnel, so from the moment we recruit you we’ll train you to do your job to the highest standards.

Your initial training will focus on preparing you – physically and mentally – to take on the challenges and responsibilities of RAF life. This is followed by specialist training in the skills you’ll need to do your particular job.

We encourage everyone to continue their professional development throughout their career. A lot of RAF training earns you civilian qualifications so, if you choose to leave, employers will be able to recognise the skills you can offer.

Initial training

Initial training is tough, but along with learning about the RAF, you’ll learn a lot about yourself and rightly hold your head up high at your graduation parade.

Airmen and airwomen

In your recruit training as an airman or airwoman, you’ll learn about military life and how to handle a weapon, you’ll master survival techniques and you’ll take part in a simulated military exercise. You’ll also learn what the RAF is all about, where you fit in and what to expect on your first posting.

RAF Regiment Gunners

As an RAF Regiment Gunner, you have to be prepared for Arctic, jungle, desert, mountain or urban conditions. Your initial training will cover weapons expertise, fieldcraft and combat tactics – with plenty of time for adventurous training activities and sport.

Officers

Initial Officer Training will introduce you to military life and skills. It will also build your leadership skills and show you how to gain trust and command respect – crucial aspects of your role as an RAF officer.

See the section on initial training to find out more.

Specialist training

Whatever your chosen role in the RAF, we give you the specialist training you need to take it on with confidence. We also equip you for a great career after the RAF – almost all of our training earns you civilian-recognised professional qualifications or credits.

Development throughout your career

Our young, dynamic workforce expect ongoing professional training – and the RAF provides that. All RAF staff are encouraged to develop their skills in order to take on new responsibilities, including leadership.

Both personally and professionally, the pace at which you can develop is limited only by your own abilities and commitment.

Job or university?

There are even opportunities to study for a degree, so you may not have to choose between starting a job and continuing your education.
